Can I Change Courses as an International Student in Australia?
Certainly! If you are an international student in Australia on a Student visa (subclass 500) and you feel that your current course is not aligning with your career goals or aspirations, you may consider changing courses. However, there are important factors to consider before making this decision:
If You Have Been Studying Your Original Course for 6 Months or More
- You can change to a same or higher level Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) course at your current institution without applying for a new student visa.
- Your education provider will notify the Department of Home Affairs about the changes in your study program.
- No need to update your ImmiAccount unless your current visa is expiring soon.
If You Have Been Studying Your Original Course for 6 Months or More
- Similar rules apply if you wish to change courses within your current education provider.
Changing to a Lower-Level or Non-AQF Course
- If you intend to switch to a lower-level or non-AQF course, you will need to apply for a new student visa.
- There are exceptions if you are transitioning from an AQF level 10 course (e.g., Doctoral degree) to an AQF 9 course (e.g., Masters degree).
